Abstract

We present the main results of a qualitative analysis of open-ended questions about social cohesion contained in the Social Cohesion among Young People questionnaire (Cohesió social entre joves; Palou, 2010) designed for extensive diagnostic research into the integration of the youth of the Maghreb in Catalonia. Two forms of the same questionnaire provide different perspectives in response to a theoretical approach through which integration is seen as a dynamic process between two parties. A total of 3498 questionnaires were given to fourteen- to eighteen-year old students from 47 secondary schools and 37 municipalities in Catalonia. Of the total, 3063 (87.6%) were not Maghreb students and 435 (12.4%) were. The questionnaire contains open-ended questions that reflect the young people’s opinions of the integration of the youth of Maghreb in Catalonia. These are essential to the analysis of integration from a qualitative perspective. The type of analysis is flexible and open, facilitating data classification based on previously established categories. One of the main conclusions of the analysis is that different cultural groups coexist in a climate of tolerance but true coexistence among young people from different backgrounds has not been achieved.
