Abstract

There’s a negative social image of immigrant groups that has a negative effect on their self-image, expectations, and academic achievement. Showing “successful referents” can improve self-concept and expectations of secondary school students, as the research confirms. The contrast in students’ answers before and after the activities, shows the complexity of their identity processes (as the rest of the teenagers), the existence of specific conditions, the importance of gender and origin variables (but not as determinant factors), and the possibility of developing experiences that generates attitude change in educational contexts. However, is this an effective way to improve educational success? What tools can we offer to secondary students to improve their chances?
